ICONS: FRENCH M47 FIELD JACKET

The M47 field jacket was born in a weird in-between moment. The war was over, but the dust hadn’t settled. France needed new fatigues, fast. The old pre-war stuff felt tired, obsolete, not fit for the kind of conflicts that were already brewing. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the Americans had just spent the better part of a decade pouring time, money, and brainpower into outfitting their soldiers properly. Like it or not, the benchmark was set.

The French took a long, hard look at what worked. Chief among those lessons was the American M-43 field jacket, already battle-tested and proven by the mid-40's. The M47 was the response. Not a carbon copy, but clearly a student of the same school. Call it informed borrowing.

Adopted in 1947 by the French Army, the jacket was designed with zero romance in mind. This was about function. Durability. Adaptability. Four big front pockets weren’t there for looks, they were meant to carry real gear, cutting down the need for extra pouches. The fit was intentionally generous, built to layer underneath, because French troops weren’t just standing around Paris. They were moving between cold European winters and brutal overseas heat.

Early versions came in heavy cotton twill, later shifting to herringbone twill aka HBT, fabrics chosen because they could breathe and still take a beating. Indochina. North Africa. Places where gear either worked or failed loudly. The stand collar could be popped when the weather turned ugly. Adjustable cuffs and a simple button front kept everything easy to fix in the field. No fragile hardware. No nonsense.

Over the years, the pattern got small tweaks here and there, but the soul stayed the same. Slightly cropped body. Broad shoulders. Big, usable pockets. That balance is exactly why the M47 still works today, long after it stopped being issued.

Bottom line: the M47 wasn’t designed to be stylish. It was France resetting the clock after WWII, building a modern field jacket for a new era of warfare. Honest. Purpose-built. A piece of clothing that earned its reputation before anyone ever thought about wearing it for looks.

Now nearly 80 years since its inception, your local vintage militia gear dealer got a small stack of these somewhat iconic field jackets up for grabs. Drop in and get your self an original field jacket.
